Alligators are highly aggressive creatures. They are fairly large but do not live in groups so fighting them often comes down to one on ones. Due to their durability, they may take a while to fall but should not prove difficult as they are often alone and can easily be fought one.
Alligators are usually found near bodies of freshwater. You may need to scour far and wide or switch regions to locate these freshwater animals.

There are only 5 spawn points for Alligators in First Light. All of them are located far north of First Light, so a bit of trekking is required to hunt these beasts.

Searching for Alligators will never be a tough job when in Cutlass Key. The place is infested with Streaked Alligators with levels averaging 28.

Windsward has 3 spawn points southwest of the Settlement. They may appear near each other, but each spawn point is separated by a cliff, so it is not suggested to use this as a farming spot if farming alligators is your objective.

Above are the spawn points for all Alligators in Everfall. The most Alligator-populated area among the four starting Areas. These areas are on the mid-level range, so a little bit of level and preparation is required not just for the alligators themselves but for the enemies you encounter along the way as well.

Alligator spots are scattered throughout the swampy region of Weaver's Fen. You'll be sure to come across one when exploring.

Finding an Alligator in Restless Shores is very easy as you'll usually be able to instantly discover one resting at a beach.

Alligators in Reekwater can be found in multiple areas. They can be spotted at the river that separates Reekwater and Everfall, the swamp just southeast of the Settlement, and the shores located directly northeast, near Restless Shore.

Alligators inhabit the streams and rivers at the center and bottom part of Mourningdale.

Alligators can mostly be found in swamps or near the shore of Ebonscale.

The few alligators native to Edengrove can be found around the rivers and lakes in the center portion of the area. There are also a few Alligators at the bottom of a waterfall near the Last Stand Outpost.

Alligators in Shattered Mountain can be found in rivers on each side of the top portion part of the map.
