I can't believe Sunday will mark the first month that you have been gone. It already seems like an eternity since I last saw you... I am still stunned at how these last two months unfolded. I love you, Mom. I try to get through these days but I find my breath taken away more than once. And the tears come at just a mere thought. I don't want you to keep this from being where you need to be. It's only natural that I would mourn not only my beloved Mom but also someone who was my friend day in and day out. We had our moments of getting snippy, laughing, crying, worrying, enjoying dinner, television, complaining that Battlestar Galactica was over (and the way it ended)... and you got me hooked on Days of Our Lives in the last six months... I savored every moment of all we did. I was by your side through all the doctor visits, hospital stays and over almost everyday (but talked to you everyday - many times). I don't know what my days will be like without you. Each day after your heart attack in 2002 was what I called "icing on the cake" because your wonderful heart stopped then. They brought you back. You went on and suffered other challenges where you were gone for a moment and brought back. This last time was too much... I thought maybe there was hope again... BUT I knew I was blessed to have you for the last 7 years. I know this now. In the end, I can't be selfish. I know the prognosis for the rest of the time that you might have had would have been horrible. I wouldn't want you to go through more chemo, being sick, not eating, not hearing... and just dying slowly and painfully. You had gone through enough these last few years. My heart breaks that I couldn't take any of that away... Even as I type this, and the memories of that last horrible day flood my brain... I draw upon your strength that got you through you days. You managed to get up and push yourself every single day. You hated not being able to do the things you once did... but you still pushed on. Now it's time for you to rest... Wherever the spirit goes...our energy. I pray that you are whole and enjoying life with the other part of your family that left this world first. As I read at your funeral mass, you mentioned that you hoped they would wait for you a little while longer. Now the time has come for you to be with them. Mom, I love you. Your son, Bernie Note - the flower bouquet is one that my sister Andrea picked up for her when we were on the way to her grave a couple of days after she was buried. The roses opened up at the grave site so nicely. There was condensation/moisture that appeared on the petals. I wasn't even aware of it as I snapped the photo. I just wanted to try and capture the colors in the available light. It matched the outfit she was wearing in the photo. We attended my nieces wedding in May and had so much fun. Little did I know when I snapped her photo that I would be using it for this. I can't believe it, actually.
